Account book, 1784-1801, and receipt book, 1784-1801, of Doctor William Lawrence of New York City, recording personal expenses, professional accounts with patients, and accounts for the firm of Lawrence, Ellison & Co., representing the partnership of William Lawrence, John Ellison, and Henry Titus, evidently founded with the aim of operating a still for the production and sale of rum. The first fifteen pages of the account book contain accounts for the operation of a still house, balanced against income from rum sales, as well individual accounts for the sale of rum and the final settlement of the firm's accounts by Lawrence, Titus, and Ellison's son in 1790. The remainder of the volume contains individual accounts for Lawrence's patients, recording charges for visits, medication, and treatments, which include bleeding, purges, inoculations, and the dressing of wounds. Doctor Lawrence's patients include: Jacob Mott, Capt. Solomon Townsend, Matthew Bowne, Capt. James Brewster, Peter Deall, White Matlack, William Matthews, Stephen Coles, and many others. Receipt book records payments by Lawrence, Ellison & Co., chiefly for purchases of wood and molasses, as well as payments made by Lawrence for personal expenses such as rent and taxes. The final portion of the volume additonally contains receipts, 1823-1835, for purchases of household goods by William and Sarah Deall, widow of Samuel Deall of Rye, New York.
